CETANZ Conference 2025 – Building Robust Tomorrows

About the Event

The CETANZ Conference 2025 was held from 6–8 August at Trinity Wharf in Tauranga, New Zealand. Organised by the Civil Engineering Testing Association of New Zealand (CETANZ), the conference brought together professionals from across the civil engineering and materials testing industry, including laboratories, engineers, technical specialists, regulators, suppliers, and industry representatives.

The theme of the 2025 conference was “Building Robust Tomorrows,” reflecting the industry’s focus on resilience, sustainability, innovation, and preparing for the challenges of the future.

Over the three-day event, participants had the opportunity to share knowledge, explore developments in testing and engineering, and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The programme began with a Road Science Tour and opening welcome event, followed by two full conference days featuring a wide range of technical presentations, industry talks, panel discussions, and exhibitor showcases.

The technical programme covered a diverse range of topics relevant to the civil engineering testing industry, including pavement materials, bitumen-treated basecourse, subgrade testing, laboratory practices, technical specifications, compaction, low-carbon materials, geotechnical monitoring, asset management, pavement investigations, testing methods, and industry standards.

Alongside the technical programme, the conference provided valuable opportunities for networking, collaboration, and professional development. The Welcome Function, industry discussions, CETANZ AGM, and Conference Dinner allowed delegates to connect with colleagues, meet new people, exchange experiences, and strengthen relationships across the civil engineering and testing community.

The evening events also provided an opportunity to celebrate the industry in a more relaxed setting. A highlight was the circus-themed Conference Dinner, held at the historic village in Tauranga, where delegates came together to enjoy an entertaining evening and celebrate the achievements and contributions of people across the sector.

A particularly notable part of the conference was the presentation of the CETANZ Awards, recognising individuals and organisations for their contributions and achievements within the industry. The award recipients included:

  • CETANZ Emerging Technician Award: Josh Miller, WSP

  • Technical Excellence Award: Portly Griffiths, WSP

  • Health & Safety Award: Geotechnics

Following the awards, a special surprise farewell gift was presented to Grant Bosma in recognition of his expertise, passion, and outstanding contribution to the civil engineering testing industry. Grant has made a significant contribution to the industry and to the people within it. His knowledge, experience, enthusiasm, and commitment have been valued by many throughout his career, and his contribution will continue to be remembered.

Thank you, Grant, for everything you have given to the industry and the people within it. We wish you all the very best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

The conference also highlighted the importance of innovation, knowledge sharing, and collaboration in supporting the future of New Zealand’s infrastructure. With continued changes in technology, testing requirements, environmental considerations, and industry standards, events such as CETANZ 2025 provide an important platform for professionals to share experiences, learn from one another, and work together towards a stronger and more resilient industry.

Held at Trinity Wharf in Tauranga, CETANZ 2025 was a valuable three days of learning, connection, and collaboration — bringing together people from across the industry to share ideas, recognise achievements, build relationships, and look towards the future of civil engineering testing in New Zealand.
