The CETANZ Conference 2023 was held from 9–11 August at the Distinction Hamilton Hotel, New Zealand. Organized by the Civil Engineering Testing Association of New Zealand (CETANZ), the event brought together professionals from across the civil materials testing industry, including laboratories, engineers, regulators, and suppliers.

This year’s theme focused on Aukaha Resilience, symbolized by the Kauri tree — a powerful emblem of strength, adaptability, and endurance. Historically, the Kauri was used by Māori to build waka (canoes) and represents the capacity of living things to evolve and face unforeseen challenges.

The word Aukaha comes from a traditional Kāi Tahu tauparapara (a poetic chant), recited by ancestors as they lashed together the framework of their waka before embarking on a journey. It signifies unity, preparation, and collective strength — values reflected in both the civil industry’s role in building resilient infrastructure and its support for individual growth and adaptability in the face of change.
