Scalatech

Scalatech Limited was founded in 2022 by three brothers -Henk, Ben and Bart Wassink.

Who combined their diverse expertise in civil engineering, diesel mechanics, and computer science to tackle a long-standing problem in the geotechnical industry: the outdated and physically demanding nature of traditional scala penetrometers.

With over 25 years of field experience, industry veteran James Whitley joined the team, during a conversation with Ben the idea for an automated scala penetrometer first took shape. That moment of inspiration launched the team’s mission: to create a smarter, safer, and more efficient solution for geotechnical testing.

At Scalatech, innovation is built from the ground up. Henk, a diesel mechanic turned full time inventor, leads the hardware design. Bart applies his background in computer science and software development to build intelligent systems that bring data to life. Together the team has developed a next generation automated scala penetrometer engineered for real-world performance, built for reliability and designed with the user in mind. Proudly developed in New Zealand, it reflects a commitment to quality, innovation, and practical field use.

New Zealand Geotechnical Society

The story of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society began in 1956, when Canterbury University College hosted the second Australia–New Zealand Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. At that time, there was no organisation in New Zealand affiliated with the international community in this field. In the absence of a national body, the University took the initiative to organise the event — a highly successful conference that laid the foundations for what would soon become the Society.

The Society was established to provide New Zealand with formal representation within the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Over the years, our role has expanded to also represent the International Society for Rock Mechanics and the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment.

Today, the New Zealand Geotechnical Society proudly serves as the national voice for professionals in geotechnical, rock, and engineering geology disciplines. We are deeply committed to fostering education, sharing knowledge, and advancing practice across our field. Our engagement with the global geotechnical community remains strong, and we value our close partnership with the Australian Geomechanics Society, together forming the Australasian regional group of these international societies.

Through conferences, publications, and professional development, the Society continues to support and connect geotechnical practitioners across New Zealand — building on a legacy that began nearly seven decades ago.
